The Great Lakes states (Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa) are pioneers in the Forest Stewardship Council’s forest certification program. By applying innovative principles of forest management and product labeling, these states are recognized leaders in practicing responsible forestry on public and private forestland. The Great Lakes State Forests FSC-certified Wood Resource Center was developed as a collaborative effort of state and county government, certified forests and chain-of-custody companies in Minnesota as well as nonprofit organizations and forestry cooperatives, funded by the McKnight Foundation. The new website, www.greatlakescertifiedwood.com is designed to help those looking for FSC certified wood products find and acquire products in sufficient quantity to meet their demands. You will find suppliers of source material (standing timber), raw material (dimension lumber), and supplies of finished materials and FSC-certified products. “This site is working to give exposure to small chain-of-custody businesses in the Midwest and help get the word out about the products that these companies have to offer," said Phil Guillery, an FSC-U.S. board member. “It’s a way to be able to refer architects and specifiers and consumers to find out more about these companies."
