In May, Martha Hodgkins joined the staff of FSC-US as Director of Communications. In addition, she will play key roles in marketing, fundraising and building FSC’s brand awareness among U.S. businesses and consumers. Martha comes to FSC-US from The Nature Conservancy, where she spent 16 years in marketing and communications, most recently as communications director for two international forest conservation programs. She served as managing editor of Nature Conservancy magazine, wrote and edited two prominent books and managed communications for several programs and capital campaigns. Prior to her Conservancy years, Martha held communications and development positions at the National Academy of Sciences and National Trust for Historic Preservation. She has a B.A. in English from the University of the South (more commonly known as “Sewanee”), and lives west of Charlottesville, Virginia, with her husband and 15-year-old son. Martha feels fortunate to be at FSC helping advance responsible forest management – and not only because she believes deeply in its conservation mission. But she views her work at FSC as a way of “balancing the ancestral karmic wheel,” she says. “My great-grandfather was a big timber landowner and sawmill operator in the Florida Panhandle in the late 1800s. In his clearing of tens of thousands of acres of slash and loblolly pine, I’m pretty certain his methods were far below FSC’s standards!”
