Minneapolis, MN (May 18, 2010) — The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) applauds the historic forest management agreement announced today in Toronto, in which the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) and nine environmental organizations pledged to work together in the responsible management and conservation of 173 million acres of Canada’s globally significant boreal forest. In the agreement, FPAC members committed to “the highest environmental standards of forest management,” setting “on-the-ground application of the existing Forest Stewardship Council National Boreal Standards” as the reference point. The nine environmental organizations committed to global recognition and support for FPAC members’ efforts. “This agreement shows that when it comes to protecting forest health, there is no comparison. FSC is the gold standard for forest management,” said Corey Brinkema, president of FSC-US, adding, “This is a great win for Canadian forests, the source of the much of the wood and paper used in the United States. We look forward to working with FPAC and the environmental groups to help implement this agreement in the years to come.” Resources: Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement: www.canadianborealforestagreement.com FPAC announcement: www.fpac.ca/index.php/en/press-releases-full/canadian-forest-industry-and-environmental-groups-sign-worlds-largest-/ About the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) The Forest Stewardship Council is an international, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests.
