Why FSC Was Important to This Project
FSC-certified products were central to the design of this house from its inception. Combining Ray Kappe’s California warm-modern style meant that a lot of wood would be used – and that the wood would be FSC-certified. In addition to the siding, the kitchen countertops are PaperStone, made from FSC-certified recycled newsprint.
The Glenn Residence is the first LEED for Homes Platinum certified house in the U.S. It is also an EnergyStar and CHEERS rated home.
This project increased consumer awareness outside the construction industry through coverage in main stream periodicals such as Business Week and LA Magazine – in addition to the coverage by Ultimate Home design and Innovative Home Magazine. Stories like this prove to consumers that eco-conscious design is real and attainable, and thereby increase the demand side for all ‘green’ products.
This project also impacted many of the subcontractors who worked on the project –by increasing builder awareness about sustainable building practices and by connecting sustainable building subcontractors with each other so that they may tackle future sustainable projects together.
