Why FSC Was Important to This Project
The Alberici headquarters building was different than a traditioinal construction project in many ways. One of the differences was our keen focus on all issues of sustainability and our pursuit of LEED® Certification.
Another goal for the project team was to act as a catalyst for market transformation. In regards to the broad topic of sustainability, the occupants of the building have hosted several thousand people for tours of the facility since its opening in 2004. The vast majority of tour groups come to learn about sustainable design and construction practices and take with them the project team’s determination to source wood from responsible sources, in addition to a greater understanding of the term FSC and its importance to our environment. The millwork supplier for the project went through the FSC process in an effort to support this and future LEED® projects proposed in the local area. The general contractor supplying the labor for the installation of the millwork/casework for the project now understands the impact FSC wood products can have on a LEED® registered project. They apply what they have learned by populating a database with contact information of contractors and suppliers that can be used on future LEED® or sustainable projects.
