2005 Entry: NRDC Robert Redford Building

Why FSC Was Important to This Project

NRDC has worked on countless green building projects. All of our offices are either certified by LEED or are currently submitting applications for certification.

Our experience with building “green” has educated us on the importance of practicing sustainable forestry. Our experts understand that half the world’s forests are gone and that the most effective solutions involve reusing, recycling and—when getting new wood—purchasing materials from well-managed forests. Because our experts know these environmentally preferable practices will save trees, habitat and biodiversity; curb pollution; and reduce the need for landfills and incinerators, we made sure the majority of our new wood products are certified by FSC.

The David Family Environmental Action Center is a unique feature of the building that allows visitors of all ages the opportunity to walk through the building and learn more about its sustainable features as well as other green building practices. The goal of The Center is to increase citizen awareness of the threats to our environment and public health and empower individuals to become involved in efforts to protect our ecosystems at the local, national and international levels. We use The Center to expose the community to the most pressing environmental issues and to inspire visitors to become involved in NRDC’s efforts to address those problems.

Since we opened The David Family Environmental Action Center in January of 2004, we have received 4000 visitors. Among these 4000, 1500 have taken a complete tour of the building. During these comprehensive tours, every visitor is introduced to the concept of sustainable forest management and, of course, to FSC.
