Transforming the Market for Certified Wood Products
This project initiated a meeting between representatives from Rainforest
Alliance, the project team, consultants, and construction managers to discuss
the purchase of FSC-certified wood products for construction and finished
products. As a result of the meeting, and also in conjunction with
Goldman Sachs’ “Green and Sustainability Program,” specifications were
included in the construction manager’s responsibilities for the use of FSCcertified
products.
In addition, Goldman Sachs has developed performance specifications for
future building projects. These specifications indicate that “the following
wood materials shall be FSC-certified products (except recycled or salvaged
wood), especially softwood trim, hardwood trim, plywood, veneer, wood
doors, wood cabinets, and wood siding (flexible to suit project). ”
Goldman Sachs was particularly encouraged to learn that their demand for
FSC-certified wood doors created a greater market for FSC-certified products,
thereby reducing the price.
Goldman Sachs is committed to become more environmentally sustainable
and will aim to increase the purchase of FSC-certified products in its new
building in lower Manhattan. They hope that their effort to use and promote
the use of more sustainable and energy efficient products will encourage
other industry leaders to follow suit.

Words of Praise
“Goldman Sachs’ actions result in a significant market
signal being sent that corporations of global stature
do care and are directly engaged in sourcing
products that meet the highest levels of sustainability. ”

“The Designing & Building with FSC Award was created
to recognize companies that help to transform
building markets and the forest products industry
through their responsible consumption. FSC is
pleased that Goldman Sachs' commitment to sustainability
includes use of FSC-certified woods, and that
FSC featured prominently in the design of this project.
We are thrilled that they so obviously find
value in the FSC and LEED programs, and hope their
example will be followed by others."
