FSC accredited, independent, “third-party” certification
bodies or “certifiers” certify forests. They assess
forest management using the FSC principles, criteria, and
regional U.S. standards. This allows FSC to remain outside
of the assessment process, and supports the integrity of the
standard, and of the FSC certification system. Certifiers
evaluate both forest management activities (forest management
certification sometimes referred to as “F.M.”)
and chain-of-custody tracking (chain-of custody-certification
sometimes referred to as “C.O.C.”) for mills,
manufactures and distributors. C.O.C. certification addresses
a company’s ability to track certified products throughout
their inventory and distribution processes.
